Objective:

Students will create a Goya inspired printmaking piece that conveys a specific emotion they feel, through the use of color, form, line, and composition.

(Step 1) Prior Research Assignment:

Gather in groups and answer the following questions.

1. Who is Goya???

2. Saturn Devouring one of His Children: What is this painting about? What is an allegory? (look it up) Watch the video.

3. Ok...so let's take a look at what is going on in the art movement at this time. Romanticism...define this movement into a couple sentences. Click on link.

4. One last look at Goya's work. Knowing what you know about Romanticism, what is the Massacre of May 3rd, 1808 about?
Define in a couple sentences.

Troubled, dark, disturbing at time...but all the while reflecting and demonstrating emotions and feelings that the artist was experiencing. This is a nice introduction to conceptual art, where the art is no longer about replicating something perfectly but rather showing an emotion, a belief, a concept through the visual work.

So what are students doing? (Step 2)

Creating a piece that demonstrating an emotion through the medium of printmaking. This step involves research and practice drawings within sketchbooks.

Printmaking huh? (Step 3)
Using a medium that allows one to replicate and work into, students will create an original design, transfer to linoleum, and carve away the pieces that will not catch the ink. The raised sections are part of the image that shows up, and the carved sections are the negative space. Negative space is just as important as the positive.
